- U.S. ROBOTICS ANNOUNCES COURIER PRODUCTS FOR MACINTOSH
-
- Award-Winning Courier I-Modem and V.Everything Products Now Designed
- Specifically for Mac Environments
-
- SKOKIE, Ill., -- January 9, 1996 -- The Corporate/Systems Division of
- U.S. Robotics (NASDAQ: USRX) today announced its first Courier
- products for the Macintosh market. Available in March, these products
- will bring the high-performance features of the Courier V.Everything
- and the Courier I-Modem to Macintosh users, making it easy for them to
- enjoy the most compatible modem available in packages designed for
- their environment.
-
- Courier products are currently used in many Macintosh applications.
- Courier's excellent performance, proven record of compatibility, and
- "bulletproof" reliability are key for people who rely on
- communications as an integral part of business -- graphic designers
- and service bureaus, for example, who need to be able to send and
- receive graphics-intensive data reliably. Now Macintosh owners can
- take advantage of Courier products designed specifically for the Mac.
-
- "We're expanding our commitment to the Mac market," said Bob Rainone,
- director of product management for U.S. Robotics' Corporate/ Systems
- Division. "We already have a strong following for Courier products
- among Macintosh owners, so the Mac market is important to us. These
- new products should help us expand our presence in this market,
- bringing Macintosh owners a new alternative for connecting their Macs
- to analog or ISDN services."
-
- The company will bring to market two Courier products for Macintosh
- owners:
-
- o Courier V.Everything for Macintosh External device, list price $595
-
- Based on the award-winning V.Everything technology, offered only by
- U.S. Robotics, this product includes V.34, for speeds up to 33.6 Kbps,
- plus backward compatibility with standards and proprietary protocols.
- The product provides seamless connectivity, proven compatibility and
- reliability.
-
- o Courier I-Modem for Macintosh External device, list price $895
-
- Designed for both ISDN and analog applications, the Courier I-Modem
- for Macintosh is an ISDN terminal adapter that includes an integral
- modem with all the features of the analog V.Everything product. Its
- Universal Connect feature automatically identifies the equipment on
- the remote end of the connection and transparently makes the highest
- speed ISDN or analog connection possible. The product must be
- physically connected to ISDN services.
-
- The Courier I-Modem for Macintosh is the first product to offer Mac
- users the flexibility to connect to both ISDN and analog devices.
- Although ISDN may be used in applications such as telecommuting and
- Internet access, the vast majority of applications, such as fax,
- service bureaus, online services and many others, are still analog.
- By including both analog and ISDN technology, the Courier I-Modem for
- Macintosh offers the most flexible solution available for Mac owners
- who want the speed of ISDN but don't want to sacrifice connectivity to
- the majority of installed equipment. The Courier I-Modem for
- Macintosh also includes an analog device port, allowing owners to
- attach a phone or fax machine for use over the second ISDN
- "B-channel."
-
- Both products will be bundled with a Macintosh hardware flow control
- cable, and with MacComCenter fax and data software for the Mac.
- Additionally, the I-Modem comes with Mac "easy install" configuration
- software, to simply and easily configure the product for ISDN
- circuits. The products are both Flash ROM-based -- Macintosh owners
- can easily upgrade the products with a simple software download file
- that runs on the Mac.
-
- U.S. Robotics is one of the world's leading suppliers of products and
- systems that provide access to information. The company designs,
- manufactures, markets and supports remote access servers, enterprise
- communications systems, desktop/mobile client products and
- modems that connect computers and other equipment over analog, digital
- and switched cellular networks, enabling users to gain access to,
- manage and share data, fax and voice information. Its customers
- include Internet service providers, regional Bell operating companies
- and a wide range of other large corporations, businesses, institutions
- and individuals. The company's 1995 sales were $889.3 million.
